About this artwork - painting analysis
Edgar Degas signs "Dance Class" as one of his most celebrated compositions, capturing the fascinating world of Parisian ballet in all its intimacy. Painted in 1874, this oil on canvas measuring 85 by 75 centimeters immortalizes a moment of rehearsal at the Paris Opera, where young ballerinas in white tutus practice under the watchful direction of a ballet master – presumably Jules Perrot, a celebrated choreographer of the era. The scene unfolds in a room with characteristic pale green walls, whose peeling paint and worn woodwork testify to the authenticity of the place. The ballerinas, arranged in small groups, await their turn, stretch, or adjust their costumes, while the teacher, dressed in dark clothing, occupies the center of the composition with his stick.
Degas's technical mastery is fully expressed in this painting where natural light, diffused through tall windows, bathes the entire scene in a soft and realistic atmosphere. The artist employs fragmented brushstrokes and a palette dominated by the vaporous whites of the tutus, the subtle greens of the walls, and the rosy flesh tones of the dancers. This approach reveals his belonging to the Impressionist movement, although Degas preferred to define himself as an "independent realist." His nervous brushwork and his asymmetrical, almost photographic composition testify to an audacious pictorial modernity for the time.
Passionate about the world of dance, Degas multiplies during the 1870s the representations of the backstage areas of the Opera, showing more interest in moments of waiting and preparation than in performance itself. This fascination with movement captured in an instant and the everyday gestures of the dancers makes him a privileged observer of Parisian life. Housed today in the Musée d'Orsay, "Dance Class" remains an exceptional testimony to the world of ballet in the nineteenth century and continues to embody the singular vision of an artist who revolutionized the representation of the body in motion.
