About this artwork - painting analysis
Created in 1482 to adorn the walls of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican, this monumental fresco by Sandro Botticelli unfolds a biblical narrative of exceptional richness. The Scenes from the Life of Moses condenses several episodes from the prophet's existence into a single composition, following the medieval principle of continuous narration. We can distinguish in particular Moses defending the daughters of Jethro against shepherds, the prophet removing his sandals before the burning bush, and the herding of his father-in-law's flock. This multiplicity of events, far from creating confusion, testifies to the compositional mastery of the Florentine artist who manages to harmoniously orchestrate a scene teeming with characters.
The chromatic palette favours warm ochres, deep blues and soft greens that give the whole work an atmosphere that is both serene and solemn. Botticelli distributes the figures with elegance in an idealized landscape where majestic trees and antique architecture – this columned temple on the right – structure the space. The clear and diffuse light, characteristic of the Florentine Early Renaissance style, bathes the scene uniformly and accentuates the fluidity of the silky draperies. The slender silhouettes, with graceful gestures and delicate faces, bear the unmistakable signature of the master, while the naturalistic details of the animals reveal his keen sense of observation.
Commissioned by Pope Sixtus IV as part of a vast decorative programme entrusted to the greatest Italian painters of the era, this fresco is part of an ambitious theological project establishing a parallel between the Old and New Testaments. Botticelli, at the height of his career, demonstrates his capacity to combine the narrative rigour demanded by the religious subject and the poetic grace that characterizes his genius. This work remains a masterful testimony to the Italian Renaissance and the synthesis achieved between Christian iconographic tradition and humanist renewal, confirming Botticelli's place among the undisputed geniuses of the Florentine Quattrocento.
