About this artwork - painting analysis

Painted only a few weeks before Vincent Van Gogh's death in May 1890, Road with Cypress and Starry Sky constitutes one of the Dutch master's final variations on the obsessive theme of the Mediterranean cypress. Since his arrival in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in May 1889, the artist has devoted genuine fascination to these dark trees, which he compares to Egyptian obelisks and which, in his eyes, embody the verticality linking earth to sky. In this monumental composition, a majestic cypress structures the central space, soaring with an almost violent energy toward the cosmic swirls that animate the celestial vault.

The arrangement of elements reveals a carefully orchestrated balance between the dynamism of the sky and terrestrial depth. In the foreground, two male figures progress along a winding path bordered by golden wheat fields whose rhythmic undulations respond to atmospheric spirals. The chromatic contrast between the deep and luminous blues of the firmament, the intense greens of the cypress, and the orange-yellows of the crops creates a visual tension characteristic of post-impressionism. The generous impasto and swirling brushwork – a veritable Van Gogh signature – impart a hypnotic vibration to the whole, where each element seems animated by its own life.

This work belongs to the artist's most productive and turbulent period, while he was interned at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum. Van Gogh pursues his research into the expression of states of mind through landscape, definitively moving away from objective representation to favor an intensely subjective vision of nature. The influence of Japonisme is apparent in the graphic treatment of the cypress, while the celestial movements prefigure twentieth-century Expressionism.

Housed in the Rijksmuseum Kröller-Müller in Otterlo, the Netherlands, this canvas testifies to the visionary power of an artist who, in his final months of existence, transformed Provençal landscapes into veritable colored symphonies, bequeathing to modernity a new way of conceiving painting as the direct expression of inner emotion.
