About this artwork - painting analysis

Painted in June 1890 in Auvers-sur-Oise, the Portrait of Dr Gachet with Foxglove Branch stands among Vincent Van Gogh's most deeply moving works, created in the final weeks of his life. The painting depicts Paul-Ferdinand Gachet, a homeopathic physician and art enthusiast who agreed to care for the Dutch artist following his discharge from the Saint-Rémy-de-Provence asylum. The man is shown resting on his elbow, his head leaning melancholically on his hand, his gaze distant and contemplative. At his side, two yellow novels and a branch of purple foxglove – a medicinal plant used for heart conditions – add symbolic dimension to this figure steeped in sadness.

The chromatic palette reveals Van Gogh's complete mastery of expressionism: deep blue tones dominate the clothing and background, creating an atmosphere of contemplative melancholy, while the face and hands are rendered in sickly yellowish-greens that heighten the psychological dimension of the portrait. The characteristic brushstrokes of the Dutch master animate every inch of the canvas – vigorous hatching, nervous swirls and undulating lines that transform the background into a turbulent sea of turquoise and cobalt. This expressionist technique conveys not only the physical appearance of the model, but above all his inner state, and indeed that of the painter himself.

Van Gogh created two versions of this portrait, one of which was sold at auction in 1990 for a record price that caused a sensation in the art world. The artist wrote to his brother Théo that he wished to paint "the sorrowful expression of our time," making Gachet the embodiment of this disillusioned modernity. This work testifies to the culmination of post-impressionism and heralds the expressionist upheavals of the twentieth century, confirming Van Gogh as a precursor of psychological exploration in painting.
