About this artwork - painting analysis
Vincent Van Gogh delivers with the Portrait of Joseph Roulin Seated, painted in 1888 in Arles, one of the most touching testimonies to his friendship with the town's postman. The man presides at the center of the composition, strapped into his royal blue uniform of the French postal service, adorned with golden buttons and yellow stripes that glimmer on the sleeves. His weathered face, framed by a generous beard with greenish and chestnut glints, expresses a quiet dignity. His frank gaze and hands confidently placed on the armrests of a green wooden chair testify to a monumental, almost patriarchal presence. The cap bearing the inscription "POSTES" in golden letters crowns this figure of benevolent authority, while the tender blue background creates a soothing halo around the model.
Van Gogh's technique unfolds here with a vigor characteristic of post-impressionism. The thick, visible brushstrokes structure the uniform in dynamic planes, creating folds and volumes through the accumulation of pictorial matter. Black outlines define the forms with an intensity that recalls the influence of Japanese prints, a passion that the Dutch artist shared with his friend Paul Gauguin. The palette dominated by deep blues contrasts powerfully with touches of gold and rosy flesh tones, orchestrating a vibrant chromatic harmony that transcends the mere documentary portrait.
This work is part of a series of six portraits that Van Gogh created of Roulin and his family during his Provençal stay, a fertile yet troubled period of his artistic output. The postman became far more than a model – a confidant, a support after the dramatic episode of the severed ear. Held at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, this portrait embodies Van Gogh's ability to capture the profound humanity of his subjects, transforming a humble civil servant into a universal figure of dignity and human solidarity.
