About this artwork - painting analysis
Vincent van Gogh immortalized in September 1888 one of the most captivating spectacles of Arles with his Starry Night over the Rhône, a luminous testimony to his fascination with nocturnal landscapes. Settled since February in this Provençal town that illuminates his palette, the Dutch painter captures here the magic of the river beneath a star-studded sky, from the quays near Place Lamartine where he rents his famous Yellow House. This canvas perfectly embodies his quest for the absolute and his desire to represent infinity through the mysteries of the starry night, a theme that will haunt him until his masterpiece in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence the following year.
The composition reveals a remarkable sense of balance between earth and sky. In the foreground, the dark waters of the Rhône undulate in golden and silvery reflections, streaked with nervous brushstrokes characteristic of Van Gogh's postimpressionist style. The lights of the city – orange and yellow gas lamps – are mirrored in the river in vibrant columns, creating a vertical dialogue with the stars that dot the firmament with a deep blue tinged with cobalt. A couple of nocturnal strollers, a romantic silhouette in the foreground, humanizes this cosmic scene and invites the viewer to share their contemplation. The Great Bear glimmers above the sleeping town, while a bridge connects the two banks in the shadows.
Van Gogh applies his paint with that gestural energy which distinguishes him, using generous impasto and directional brushstrokes that animate every inch of the canvas. Contrary to his personal torments, this work radiates a meditative serenity, an almost musical harmony between nocturnal blues and luminous golds. The painter writes then to his brother Theo his conviction that the night possesses richer colors than the day.
Housed at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris since 1975, this canvas testifies to Van Gogh's most prolific and luminous period, before his mental health deteriorated dramatically. It remains an essential milestone of postimpressionism and a timeless celebration of nocturnal beauty.
