About this artwork - painting analysis
Painted in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence during one of the most fertile and turbulent periods of his life, The First Steps (after Millet) testifies to the profound admiration Vincent Van Gogh held for Jean-François Millet, master of peasant realism. This 1890 canvas reinterprets with fervor a scene of family intimacy: a father kneeling in a garden stretches his arms toward his child who, supported by his mother, rushes toward him in his first attempts at walking. This universal moment of tenderness unfolds before a modest dwelling with whitewashed walls, surrounded by flowering trees and laundry drying on a clothesline, evoking the simplicity of rural everyday life.
Van Gogh's palette explodes in luminous vibrations: brilliant yellows dominate the ground and foliage, while intense blues clothe the figures and echo across the sky. The thick, swirling, and energetic brushstrokes characteristic of Dutch post-impressionism transform this humble scene into an ardent celebration of life. Vigorous brushwork, applied in generous impasto, gives the whole a nearly sculptural texture where the pictorial matter vibrates with contained energy. Van Gogh does not copy Millet – he reinvents him, infusing this composition with his own chromatic language and his emotional vision of the peasant world.
Created during his voluntary internment at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum, this work is part of a series of interpretations Van Gogh undertook after Millet's engravings, a genuine spiritual exercise that allowed him to maintain a connection with the outside world while exploring themes of hope and continuity. Housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, this canvas illustrates how the artist transfigured his models into veritable visual hymns, where color becomes language and humble everyday life rises to the status of universal subject, carrier of a profound and timeless humanity.
