Painted in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence during one of the most fertile and turbulent periods of his life, The First Steps (after Millet) testifies to the profound admiration Vincent Van Gogh held for Jean-François Millet, master of peasant realism. This 1890 canvas reinterprets with fervor a scene of family intimacy: a father kneeling in a garden stretches his arms toward his child who, supported by his mother, rushes toward him in his first attempts at walking. This universal moment of tenderness unfolds before a modest dwelling with whitewashed walls, surrounded by flowering trees and laundry drying on a clothesline, evoking the simplicity of rural everyday life.

Van Gogh's palette explodes in luminous vibrations: brilliant yellows dominate the ground and foliage, while intense blues clothe the figures and echo across the sky. The thick, swirling, and energetic brushstrokes characteristic of Dutch post-impressionism transform this humble scene into an ardent celebration of life.
