About this artwork - painting analysis
Painted during the summer of 1889 while Vincent Van Gogh was staying at the Saint-Rémy-de-Provence asylum, Cypresses embodies the Dutch master's obsession with these dark, slender trees that punctuate the Mediterranean landscape. The artist saw in them symbols of death but also of heroic verticality, vegetable flames that connect the earth to the sky. In this canvas housed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, two monumental cypresses dominate the composition, their silhouettes of an almost black green rising with dramatic power toward a turbulent sky of blues and creamy whites.
Van Gogh's technique reaches remarkable intensity here: thick, swirling brushstrokes literally sculpt the pictorial matter, conferring on the trees an almost architectural presence. The swirls of foliage seem animated by an internal movement, as if sap and wind merged into a palpable vital energy. The contrast between the dark masses of the cypresses and the luminosity of the sky creates a striking visual tension, while touches of orange-yellow scattered across the foreground bring a color vibration characteristic of post-impressionism. This reduced yet powerful palette—deep greens, celestial blues, solar yellows—testifies to the persistent influence of Provençal light on the artist's work.
Van Gogh created several versions of cypresses during this extraordinarily fertile yet painful creative period, marked by his recurrent psychological crises. For him, these trees possessed "beautiful lines like an Egyptian obelisk," and their representation constituted a technical challenge as much as a spiritual quest. The expressive execution, gestural energy, and emotional intensity of Cypresses foreshadow twentieth-century expressionism, making this work an essential milestone in the evolution of modern art and a vibrant testament to Van Gogh's ability to transfigure nature into inner vision.
