Painted in February 1890 in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, Almond Blossoms by Vincent Van Gogh celebrates the birth of his nephew, the son of his brother Theo. This luminous work full of hope stands in sharp contrast to the inner turmoil that often characterizes the Dutch master's output during his stay in a psychiatric asylum. The gnarled branches of the almond tree, among the first to blossom at the end of winter, symbolize renewal and new life, making this canvas a true hymn to family love expressed through color and painterly gesture.

The composition unfolds against a vibrant, uniform and bold turquoise-blue background that evokes both the Mediterranean sky and the Japanese prints that Van Gogh admired passionately. This intimate destination perhaps explains the unusual gentleness it emanates, far from the cosmic swirls of The Starry Night.
