At the end of the eighteenth century, William Turner cast his gaze as a young prodigy upon the Welsh coastlines and captured the imposing silhouette of Caernarvon Castle in twilight. Painted in 1798, this oil on panel of modest dimensions – merely 15 x 23 centimetres – already testifies to the British artist's fascination with medieval architecture and the misty atmospheres that would become his signature. The fortress built by Edward I in the thirteenth century rises majestically on the shore, its dark walls outlined against a golden sky crossed by vaporous clouds, while small boats glide peacefully across the calm waters that reflect this timeless scene.
The composition reveals a Turner still young – he is merely twenty-three years old – yet already a master in the art of constructing space. The castle occupies the right half of the painting, an imposing vertical mass that contrasts with the soothing horizontality of the water. The dominant tonalities oscillate between warm ochres, deep browns and silvery greys, creating a subtle chromatic harmony where light seems to emanate from the background. This diffuse, almost golden luminosity, foreshadows the atmospheric investigations that would bring the painter renown. The technique, though more meticulous than in his later works, already reveals that unique capacity to dissolve forms in light, characteristic of nascent Romanticism.
This period marks Turner's early years within the Royal Academy, where he has exhibited regularly since 1790. Influenced by seventeenth-century Dutch landscape painters and by his compatriot Richard Wilson, he nonetheless develops a personal vision that transcends traditional vedutism. His travels throughout Great Britain nourish his work with picturesque and sublime views, where medieval ruins and wild nature engage in dialogue within a Romantic melancholy.
