About this artwork - painting analysis
Pierre-Auguste Renoir signs with The Concert one of the final compositions of his long career, completed in 1919, the very year of his death. This intimate canvas celebrates feminine sensuality and the delicate atmosphere of bourgeois interiors, themes dear to the artist during his final years of creation. The scene depicts a young woman seated in an upholstered armchair, dressed in a shimmering bodice with golden and rosy hues. Her pensive attitude, with her gaze slightly lowered, evokes a musical reverie as she appears to delicately hold an instrument or sheet music. At her side, a generous bouquet of roses unfolds its petals in a vase, forming a floral counterpoint to the softness of the feminine figure. The whole composition is bathed in warm chromatic harmony where ochres, pale pinks, and golden touches dominate, unifying the model, décor, and still life.
Renoir's brushwork here achieves an almost vaporous fluidity, characteristic of his late period. The contours dissolve into a smooth pictorial texture, applied through blended strokes that make forms and colors vibrate. This technique reflects the Impressionist master's evolution toward an increasingly lyrical and decorative style, where light no longer sculpts volumes but envelops them in a pearlescent atmosphere. Despite the arthritic pain that forced Renoir to paint with brushes attached to his hands, the artist retained an exceptional chromatic sensitivity and an undiminished celebration of beauty.
The Concert continues the Impressionist research while testifying to a return to classical sources, notably Rubens and the Venetian masters whom Renoir admired. Preserved at the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto, this work illustrates the creative persistence of an octogenarian artist who, until his final breath, never ceased to magnify the joy of living and the harmony of forms. This pictorial testament remains a vibrant homage to femininity and art, combining technical virtuosity and visual poetry in the imperishable legacy of French Impressionism.
