Rondanini Pietà - Michel-Ange

Rondanini Pietà

Artwork by Michel-Ange • 1564

About this artwork - painting analysis

The Rondanini Pietà, Michelangelo's final creation, stands as a deeply moving testament left by the Florentine master to humanity. Sculpted until the last days of his life in 1564, this unfinished work in white marble reveals a radically different vision from the Saint Peter's Pietà created nearly seventy years earlier. Here, the body of Christ and that of the Virgin Mary merge in a vertical, almost spectral embrace, where the two figures seem to become one. The composition stretches upward, defying the classical canons of representation to propose an intensely spiritual interpretation of maternal grief. The surfaces remain rough in places, bearing witness to work interrupted by the artist's death at eighty-eight years old, while other areas reveal delicate polishing that accentuates the fragility of the bodies.

This sculpture embodies the culmination of the non-finito so dear to Michelangelo, this technique that allows the creative process to appear and grants the work a timeless dimension. The treatment of volumes deliberately moves away from Renaissance idealism to embrace an almost modern, nearly expressionist approach. The disproportionately elongated legs of Christ, the extreme simplification of the features, the abandonment of anatomical details – everything contributes to creating pure emotion, stripped of all artifice. Michelangelo moreover reworked and modified this Pietà several times, even removing the original right arm of Christ, visible separately in the final composition.

Housed at the Castello Sforzesco in Milan since 1952, the Rondanini Pietà takes its name from the Roman family that owned it for centuries. This final work illustrates the spiritual quest of an aging artist, confronted with his own mortality and inhabited by profound faith. It remains today one of the most moving testimonies to Michelangelo's genius and surprisingly prefigures the artistic research of the centuries to come.
