About this artwork - painting analysis

An undisputed masterpiece by Michelangelo, the Pietà remains one of the most moving sculptures in the history of Western art. Completed between 1498 and 1499 when the artist was only twenty-four years old, this monumental work in Carrara marble testifies to an astonishing technical mastery for such a young sculptor. Commissioned by French cardinal Jean de Bilhères to adorn his future funerary chapel, it depicts the Virgin Mary holding on her lap the lifeless body of Christ after the descent from the cross. The pyramidal composition gives the whole work perfect stability, while the ample and fluid drapery of Mary's garment contrasts with the smooth, sculpted anatomy of Christ's body.

Michelangelo deploys unprecedented virtuosity in this Pietà in the treatment of marble, which he manages to render almost translucent in places. The folds of the veil and robe seem animated with a life of their own, as if frozen in perpetual motion. Mary's youthful face – an artistic choice that raised some questions at the time – expresses contained, almost meditative sorrow, far from traditional representations of maternal suffering. This idealized youth reflects Florentine Neoplatonic thought, according to which spiritual purity preserves from physical decay. The balance between anatomical realism and formal idealization characterizes the approach of the Italian Renaissance, of which Michelangelo becomes here one of the most brilliant exponents.

Housed in the Basilica of Saint Peter in the Vatican, this sculpture is the only work signed by the artist – his signature appears engraved on the baldric crossing the Virgin's chest. Protected since 1972 by bulletproof glass following an act of vandalism, the Pietà continues to attract millions of visitors each year. It embodies the perfect synthesis of technical virtuosity, spiritual depth, and formal beauty, establishing Michelangelo as one of the absolute geniuses of Western sculpture.
