Édouard Manet captures with remarkable boldness the figure of a street singer in this masterful 1862 canvas. The character, dressed in a grey costume with black borders embellished with passementerie, stands in a theatrical posture, holding cherries to his mouth which he nibbles delicately. His direct gaze confronts the viewer while in his other hand he holds a yellow paper cone containing the fruit. Topped with a dark hat and draped in a cape, this street performer embodies the bohemian spirit of Paris during the Second Empire with a magnetic presence that transcends his humble social condition.
The composition reveals Manet's pictorial genius in his treatment of tonal values and his vigorous brushwork. The subtle greys of the costume contrast with the luminous brilliance of the yellow paper, while the dark background, punctuated by an opening on the left hinting at an interior space, concentrates all attention on the protagonist.
