About this artwork - painting analysis

Enchanting and enigmatic, Water Serpents II by Gustav Klimt immerses the viewer in a dreamlike universe where sensuality and symbolism intertwine. Painted in 1907, this monumental canvas of 145 x 80 cm depicts two nude female figures entwined in a daring horizontal composition. Their pale and luminous bodies emerge from a luxuriant ornamental flow – a sea of decorative motifs where organic forms serpentine, evoking simultaneously water, hair, and reptiles. The woman in the foreground, reclining in complete abandon, displays a flaming red mane scattered with stylized flowers in dazzling colors: blues, oranges, purples, and gold mingle in a profusion of decoration characteristic of his work.

The Viennese artist deploys here his most refined visual vocabulary, combining anatomical realism with ornamental abstraction. The pearlescent flesh tones of the female bodies, rendered with an almost photographic softness, starkly contrast with the chromatic explosion and quasi-textile texture of the decorative elements. This juxtaposition – Klimt's signature – reveals the influence of Byzantine art, the mosaics of Ravenna he discovered during his trip to Italy in 1903, as well as Japanese printmaking. The technique blends oil and gold leaf, conferring upon the whole a precious and sacred dimension.

Water Serpents II belongs to the golden period of Viennese Secession, a movement of which Klimt was the leading figure. The work explores themes of eroticism, metamorphosis, and feminine nature, omnipresent in the symbolist production of the era. The serpents, ancestral symbols of temptation and regeneration, blend here into a pantheistic celebration of femininity and nature.

Held today in a private collection, this painting illustrates masterfully Klimt's ability to transcend the boundaries between decorative art and history painting, bequeathing to nascent modernity a vision where formal beauty and symbolic depth harmoniously merge.
