About this artwork - painting analysis
In 1912, Gustav Klimt signed the Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer II, the second depiction of this Viennese patroness who had already inspired him five years earlier for one of his most emblematic masterpieces. Unlike the first portrait, resplendent with gold and Byzantine motifs, this version reveals a radical transformation in the Austrian master's style. Adele stands hieratically, dressed in a white gown with strict vertical lines and a long turquoise coat scattered with delicate flowers. Her immense black hat frames her pale face, conferring upon her a presence that is both majestic and melancholic. The saturated pink background, enriched with floral motifs and Chinese decorative objects, dialogues with the blue floor punctuated by circular organic forms that evoke water lilies or pebbles polished by water.
The painting technique testifies to Klimt's evolution towards a more vivid palette and freer brushwork, already foreshadowing early Expressionism. Bold flat areas of colour – pink, emerald green, cobalt blue – structure the composition in horizontal bands, while the stylized floral motifs of the coat perpetuate the painter's attachment to the ornamental characteristics of the Vienna Secession. This work nevertheless marks a break with the golden period: the absence of gold leaf and the simplified decoration reflect a pursuit of modernity and refinement. The treatment of fabric, almost translucent in places, reveals Klimt's technical virtuosity in rendering materials.
Commissioned by Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer, this portrait remains one of Klimt's last great female effigies before his death in 1918. Confiscated by the Nazis and then restituted to the rightful heirs in 2006, the painting was acquired by Oprah Winfrey for 87.9 million dollars, illustrating the patrimonial and symbolic value of these looted artworks. This portrait perpetuates today the dialogue between decorative beauty and psychological power that characterizes Viennese art of the early twentieth century.
