About this artwork - painting analysis
Painted in 1908 at the height of his golden period, Gustav Klimt's Danaé embodies one of the most sensual and original interpretations of the Greek myth. The Viennese artist depicts the princess locked in a bronze tower, visited by Zeus transformed into a shower of gold to seduce her. Unlike classical versions of the myth, Klimt chooses to show Danaé asleep, curled up in a fetal position that evokes both vulnerability and surrender to pleasure. Her flaming red hair unfolds in sensual spirals, while her nude body in ivory and pink tones contrasts with the sumptuous draperies enveloping her. The divine golden rain streams down her thigh in a barely veiled erotic metaphor, symbolizing the union between mortal and divine.
Klimt's technique reaches remarkable mastery here in the marriage of naturalism and ornamentation. Danaé's body, modeled with almost photographic delicacy, is set within a setting of geometric and organic patterns typical of the Viennese Secession. The actual gold leaf applied to the canvas – a legacy of his father's jewelry workshop – creates the shimmering luminosity that characterizes the works of his golden period, alongside The Kiss and the Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer. The circles, spirals and oval shapes scattered throughout the composition reveal the influence of Art Nouveau and Byzantine decorative arts discovered in Ravenna.
Housed in the Leopold Museum in Vienna, this canvas testifies to the boldness with which Klimt approached female sensuality, defying the conventions of imperial Vienna. The work was considered scandalous for its time due to its unapologetic eroticism, but it perfectly illustrates Klimt's vision of woman as a vital force and source of mystery. Danaé remains today one of the most famous masterpieces of Viennese symbolism, a brilliant testament to a modernity that combines mythological tradition and decidedly innovative pictorial language.
