The Swiss painter constructs a labyrinthine composition where geometric shapes intertwine – triangles evoking stylized fir trees, rectangles suggesting archaic constructions – and a dark human figure with a marked profile that seems to preside over this phantasmagoric landscape. The dominant hues oscillate between earthy browns, acidic greens and chalky whites, lending the whole work an atmosphere that is both primitive and mystical. The diffuse light, almost twilight-like, bathes this scene in an unreal ambiance, as if emerging from a dream or an ancestral tale.
The technique employed by Paul Klee skillfully combines oil painting with graphic effects, with incised lines that structure the space and create a characteristic tactile texture.
