About this artwork - painting analysis
Painted in 1605 by El Greco, the work entitled The Tears of St Peter constitutes one of the most poignant representations of repentance in Spanish Counter-Reformation art. The painting depicts the apostle Peter in a moment of profound contrition after having denied Christ three times, a theme the painter revisited several times throughout his career. Dressed in sumptuous yellow-gold drapery and a pale green cloak with silvery reflections, the saint raises his eyes toward heaven in an attitude of intense supplication, hands clasped in prayer. At his feet rest the keys to the kingdom of heaven, a traditional attribute that recalls his role as the foundation of the Church. In the background, a cave opens onto a nocturnal landscape where the blurred silhouettes of figures witnessing the Passion of Christ can be made out, directly evoking the episode of the denial.
The composition bears witness to the late Mannerism characteristic of El Greco, with its elongated figures of stretched proportions and this bold chromatic palette that marries warm and cold tones in striking contrast. Light, a central element of pictorial drama, emanates from a divine source suggested at the top of the painting, sculpting the saint's emaciated face and creating zones of deep shadow that accentuate the spiritual intensity of the scene. The nervous and expressive brushstrokes, typical of the manner of the artist of Cretan origin, confer upon the whole an almost mystical visionary dimension.
Housed in the Hospital de San Juan Bautista de Afuera in Toledo, this version of The Tears of St Peter fits within the Tridentine context that valued the representation of penitent saints as models of conversion for the faithful. El Greco, established in Spain since 1577, had perfectly assimilated the theological requirements of his time while developing a profoundly personal pictorial language. This work bears witness to the painter's ability to transcend realism to attain a pure spiritual dimension, making him a precursor of modern expressionism.
