Painted in 1891 during Paul Gauguin's first stay in Tahiti, Les Parau Parau – literally "palavers" or "conversations" in Tahitian – embodies the quest for a lost paradise and primitive authenticity that obsessed the French artist at the time. This major postimpressionist canvas reveals a group of Tahitian women gathered in a lush landscape, absorbed in silent discussion from which the viewer remains excluded. The scene exudes a meditative and mysterious atmosphere, as if Gauguin were attempting to capture the very essence of a culture he idealized while discovering it.
The composition is organized according to a deliberately naive arrangement, rejecting traditional perspective in favor of a flattened spatial construction that recalls Japanese prints and medieval art.
