About this artwork - painting analysis

Paul Gauguin signs with La Belle Angèle one of the most emblematic portraits of his Breton period, completed in 1889 during his stay in Pouldu. The model, Marie-Angélique Satre, wife of the mayor of Pont-Aven, appears in a bold composition that breaks with the academic conventions of the time. Dressed in traditional Breton costume – black dress, starched white collar and characteristic headdress – the young woman stands in a hieratic posture, her hands crossed before her. Her soft-featured face expresses a certain melancholy, while her gaze seems to drift into silent reverie.

The composition reveals all the boldness of the synthetism developed by Gauguin. The painter confines his model within a circular medallion that evokes Japanese compositions, testifying to the influence of Japonism then in vogue in Parisian artistic circles. On the left, a Tahitian idol prefigures his imminent departure for the South Seas, creating a mysterious dialogue between Breton and Oceanic cultures. The deep blue background, scattered with stylized flowers, contrasts with the bold areas of vivid colors – ochre, yellow and red – that structure the space. This formal simplification, characteristic of the Pont-Aven school, favors colored surfaces delimited by dark outlines, in the manner of medieval stained glass or Japanese prints.

The inscription "LA BELLE ANGÈLE" in capital letters definitively anchors the work in a symbolist dimension where the portrait transcends simple realistic representation. Now housed in the Musée d'Orsay, this canvas was initially rejected by the model himself, reluctant to recognize this modernist vision of his image. This initial rejection did not prevent the work from becoming a masterpiece of post-impressionism, illustrating Gauguin's quest for a primitive and synthetic art that would durably influence the avant-gardes of the twentieth century.
