About this artwork - painting analysis
Completed in 1476, the Portrait of Ginevra Benci bears witness to Leonardo da Vinci's precocious genius, when he was barely twenty-four years old. This oil on wood depicts a young Florentine aristocrat, Ginevra de' Benci, whose enigmatic gaze and silent presence already foreshadow the famous Mona Lisa. The pale and luminous face of the young woman emerges from a dark background dominated by a juniper tree – "ginepro" in Italian, an obvious allusion to the model's name. Her curled hair frames delicate features, while her bust stands out against a twilight landscape where one can distinguish trees, a body of water, and bluish mountains characteristic of Tuscan painting.
The technique employed reveals Leonardo's emerging mastery of sfumato, that imperceptible transition between shadows and light which would become his signature. The contours of the face blend subtly into the surrounding atmosphere, creating an impression of life and psychological depth remarkable for the era. The dominant tones – ochres, browns, dark greens – impart a contemplative and mysterious atmosphere to the whole. Ginevra's sober clothing, with its laced bodice and brown sleeves, contrasts with the almost unreal brilliance of her diaphanous complexion.
Likely commissioned on the occasion of Ginevra's betrothal to Luigi Niccolini in 1474, this portrait fits within the Florentine Quattrocento tradition while transcending it. Leonardo breaks with the conventions of his time by opting for a three-quarter pose rather than the strict profile then in fashion, thereby infusing his work with bold modernity. Held at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, this painting remains Leonardo's only surviving female portrait in North America and the sole work by the Italian master displayed on the American continent, precious testimony to the Renaissance genius who forever revolutionized the art of portraiture.
