About this artwork - painting analysis

Leonardo da Vinci signs with The Virgin and Child with Saint Anne one of his most enigmatic and accomplished compositions, completed around 1510 after many years of development. The Florentine master depicts three generations united within a harmonious human pyramid: Saint Anne, mother of the Virgin, dominates the composition with her benevolent and mysterious gaze while Mary, seated upon her lap in a posture of remarkable fluidity, leans toward the Christ Child who plays with a lamb, a symbol prefiguring Christ's sacrifice. This layering of bodies creates an ensemble of troubling grace where the figures seem to merge in a continuous circular movement.

The chromatic palette favors ochre tones, deep greens, and delicate blues characteristic of Leonardo's Milanese period. The landscape unfolding in the background reveals those vaporous mountains and fantastic rock formations so dear to the artist, bathed in that misty atmosphere obtained through sfumato – this revolutionary technique consisting of superimposing fine layers of glaze to blur contours and create imperceptible transitions between shadow and light. The faces, notably that of Saint Anne with her enigmatic smile reminiscent of the Mona Lisa, testify to Vinci's fascination with human psychology and the expression of subtle emotions.

Probably commissioned by Louis XII for the royal chapel, this oil on wood painting preserved in the Louvre Museum perfectly illustrates the spirit of the Italian High Renaissance and Leonardo's scientific research into anatomy and atmospheric perspective. The work underwent an exceptionally long gestation period, with the artist working on it intermittently for nearly twenty years, ultimately leaving it unfinished in certain details.

Through its pyramidal construction, its innovative treatment of space and its symbolic charge, The Virgin and Child with Saint Anne remains an essential milestone in the history of Western art, durably influencing the generations of artists that followed in their quest for perfect harmony and balance.
