The Madonna of the Yarnwinder

Artwork by Leonard De Vinci • 1501

About this artwork - painting analysis

Painted around 1501, Leonardo da Vinci's Madonna of the Yarnwinder depicts the Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child on her lap in a moment of striking intimacy. The young Christ turns away from his mother to grasp a spindle shaped like a cross, a symbolic prefiguration of his tragic destiny. This seemingly domestic scene thus takes on a prophetic dimension that only Mary appears to sense, her gaze filled with restrained melancholy. The background reveals a mountainous landscape with turbulent relief and bluish distances, typical of Vinci's manner, where nature participates in the meditative atmosphere of the composition.

The sfumato technique, of which Leonardo da Vinci was the undisputed master, envelops the figures here in a delicate haze that softens contours and creates imperceptible transitions between shadow and light. The golden flesh tones contrast with the dark blue drapery of the Virgin, rendered with remarkable virtuosity in the treatment of folds and textures. The chromatic palette, dominated by ochres, deep blues, and muted greens, imparts a contemplative harmony to the whole. Diffuse light bathes the scene in an almost supernatural softness, characteristic of Italian High Renaissance.

This work belongs to the period of maturity of the Florentine master, contemporary with The Virgin of the Rocks and preceding The Mona Lisa by a few years. Probably commissioned by Florimond Robertet, secretary to the King of France Louis XII, it testifies to Leonardo's international reputation. Several versions of this painting exist, giving rise to debates and controversies among art historians regarding their exact attribution – some being considered workshop copies.

The Madonna of the Yarnwinder remains today in a private New York collection, after having experienced a tumultuous history, notably marked by a spectacular theft in 2003 from a Scottish castle. This composition magnifies Leonardo da Vinci's art, combining spiritual depth, technical innovation, and subtle psychology in a synthesis that would durably influence Western painting.
