About this artwork - painting analysis
Bathed in characteristic golden light, The Girl with the Flute by Jan Vermeer captivates with its mystery and troubling incompleteness. Painted around 1665, this small oil on oak panel – barely 18 centimeters – depicts a young woman wearing an extravagant hat adorned with yellow and green feathers. Her face turned toward the viewer radiates an enigmatic presence, while her hands appear to delicately hold a musical instrument. The dark background contrasts with the luminous brilliance of the hat and the dazzling whiteness of the collar, creating a subtle interplay of light and shadow that draws the eye toward the face of the protagonist.
The attribution of this work to Vermeer remains one of the most fascinating debates in art history. Held at the National Gallery in Washington, it presents a technique different from the certified paintings of the master of Delft. The brushwork appears freer, almost sketched in certain areas, particularly the garment and background, suggesting either an unfinished work or the intervention of a workshop or follower. Some art historians have suggested the possibility of a painting executed by a student under the master's supervision, or even an experimental work from his youth. This uncertainty detracts nothing from the fascination it exerts, testifying to the considerable influence of Vermeer's style on his contemporaries.
The painting is fully part of the Dutch Golden Age, a period when intimate scenes and genre portraits enjoyed resounding success. The attention to textures – the metallic luster of the hat, the softness of the white fabric – recalls the technical virtuosity characteristic of Vermeer, even if the execution differs slightly from his usual standards. The precious pigments used, particularly for the golden highlights, nonetheless confirm the artistic ambition of this creation.
The Girl with the Flute continues to fuel research and controversy, perfectly embodying the areas of uncertainty that still surround Vermeer's work, an artist of whom only thirty-four paintings are today authenticated with certainty.
