About this artwork - painting analysis

Painted in 1656 by Diego Velázquez, Las Meninas has fascinated for more than three centuries with its dizzying play on representation and the gaze. This monumental canvas of 318 x 276 cm, housed in the Museo del Prado in Madrid, captures a suspended moment in the painter's studio at the royal palace of Madrid. At the center of the composition, the Infanta Margaret Theresa, aged five, is surrounded by her ladies-in-waiting – the famous meninas – a dwarf woman, a dwarf man, and a placid dog in the foreground. Yet the true subject remains enigmatic: Velázquez has depicted himself, palette in hand, before an immense canvas of which only the back is visible. In the background, a mirror reflects the silhouettes of King Philip IV and Queen Mariana of Austria, suggesting that they are the true models of the painting in progress.

Natural light enters through an invisible window on the right, sculpting faces and fabrics with stunning precision. The muted colors – grays, olive greens, ochres – enhance the brilliance of the complexions and precious textiles. Velázquez deploys all his technical virtuosity here: the brushstrokes, of remarkable freedom for the time, create an impression of movement and life. The textures of the dresses, the dog's fur, the metallic reflections are rendered with an economy of means that already foreshadows Impressionism.

Court painter and undisputed master of Spanish Baroque, Velázquez signs with this work a masterful reflection on the act of painting and the status of the artist. By including himself in the scene alongside the royal family, he asserts the dignity of his art. The painting gained late but considerable renown: Goya, Manet, and Picasso would draw inspiration from it, fascinated by its modernity.

Las Meninas remains an inexhaustible visual enigma, a silent manifesto where gazes intersect, where the boundaries between reality and representation blur, confirming Velázquez as one of the greatest geniuses of Western painting.
