About this artwork - painting analysis
Flamboyant and tragic, the history of the "Vase with Five Sunflowers" painted by Vincent Van Gogh in 1888 remains inseparable from his doomed fate – this canvas having been destroyed by fire during the Second World War. This version, less well-known than its counterparts exhibited in the world's greatest museums, nonetheless bore witness to the Dutch master's obsession with these solar flowers that embodied in his eyes the light and life of the French South. On a generous format of 69 x 98 centimeters, Van Gogh arranged five sunflowers in a vase with rounded forms, capturing different stages of blooming and wilting, symbols of life's inexorable cycle.
The chromatic palette reveals all the singularity of post-impressionist genius: striking yellows sit alongside deep ochres, warm browns and touches of coppery orange, all contrasting with a dark blue-grey background that accentuates the vibrant presence of the bouquet. Van Gogh applied paint in thick layers, using this impasto technique that characterizes his mature style. The swirling brushstrokes literally sculpt the hearts of the flowers, creating an almost three-dimensional texture where the pictorial matter becomes as expressive as the subject itself.
This series of sunflowers was created in Arles, during the summer and autumn of 1888, when the artist was preparing the Yellow House to welcome Paul Gauguin. These floral compositions were meant to adorn the shared studio, asserting Van Gogh's artistic personality during a period of intense creativity and hope for a community of artists. The painter regarded these sunflowers as signatures, manifestos of his quest for pure color and emotional expression.
Though lost forever, this version testifies to the creative urgency that animated Van Gogh, capable of multiplying variations on the same motif to extract all its luminous and symbolic substance, bequeathing to posterity a work whose universal scope transcends even its physical destruction.
