About this artwork - painting analysis

Painted in June 1889 from the window of his bedroom at the Saint-Rémy-de-Provence asylum, Vincent Van Gogh's Starry Night embodies one of the most famous nocturnal visions in the history of art. The Dutch painter transposes an imaginary landscape where a dark cypress emerges in the foreground, like a vegetative flame rising toward the firmament, while a village with bluish roofs stretches peacefully at the foot of undulating hills. The sky occupies nearly two-thirds of the composition, traversed by vertiginous swirls that animate the constellations and transform the celestial vault into a cosmic ocean coursing with luminous currents.

The chromatic palette reveals Van Gogh's complete mastery of expressionism: deep ultramarine blues dialogue with violets and cobalts, punctuated by flashes of lemon yellow and orange that embody twinkling stars. The moon, enormous and radiant in the upper right corner, answers to eleven stars arranged like so many phosphorescent jewels. The brushwork is vigorous, almost sculptural, applied in thick concentric commas that create a hypnotic rotational movement. This impasto technique, characteristic of Post-Impressionism, grants the work an almost tactile dimension where each brushstroke becomes visible, translating the artist's raw emotion.

Created during one of Van Gogh's psychiatric stays, this canvas paradoxically testifies to a period of intense and controlled production. While the cypress and hills stem from his direct observations, the village appears inspired by his Dutch memories, thus creating a synthesis between memory and perception. Housed at the Museum of Modern Art in New York since 1941, Starry Night remains today one of the most reproduced and admired paintings in the world, symbolizing art's capacity to transfigure reality into a universal emotional experience where inner turmoil and cosmic beauty merge into a haunting harmony.
