Painted during the summer of 1888 in Arles, Vincent Van Gogh's The Sower at Sunset captures one of the Dutch artist's most obsessive motifs: the figure of a peasant sowing grain beneath a blazing star. This canvas, held at the Rijksmuseum Kröller-Müller in Otterlo, illustrates Van Gogh's fascination with the eternal cycle of nature and agricultural labour, a theme he inherited notably from Jean-François Millet, a painter he revered deeply.
