About this artwork - painting analysis
A true snapshot of Parisian theatrical life in the late 19th century, Henry Samary of the Comédie-Française is captured with virtuosity in all his worldly elegance as an actor backstage. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec represents here Henry Samary, a member of the prestigious Comédie-Française, in a theatrical pose that reveals as much about his model's personality as it does about the painter's penetrating gaze. Dressed in a refined stage costume consisting of a purple frock coat with iridescent highlights, a dark waistcoat and black trousers, the actor adjusts his monocle in a gesture of distinctly aristocratic affectation. This attitude, both natural and sophisticated, bears witness to the atmosphere of the dressing rooms and corridors of the French theatre that Toulouse-Lautrec frequented assiduously.
The bold composition favours a bird's-eye perspective that places the viewer in the privileged position of an observer of the theatrical scene. The wooden floorboards with marked slats structure the space along dynamic diagonals, while the green and gold curtains in the background evoke the hushed environment of the wings. The chromatic palette, dominated by emerald greens, deep purples and touches of ochre, creates an atmosphere that is both sophisticated and intimate. Toulouse-Lautrec uses here the technique of painting in essence on cardboard, a process he was particularly fond of and which allowed him to achieve this matte texture and these rapid brushstrokes so characteristic of his style.
Created in 1889, this work is fully part of the post-impressionist movement and foreshadows the explorations of Art Nouveau. The artist, heir to Edgar Degas's innovations in photographic framing and scenes of spectacle, develops here his own vision of the society portrait. Unlike rigid academic portraits, he captures movement and life, privileging psychological expression over idealization.
Housed in the Musée d'Orsay, this canvas remains a precious testimony to Parisian theatrical circles and masterfully illustrates Toulouse-Lautrec's talent for sketching with irony and tenderness the figures of nocturnal and artistic Paris.
