About this artwork - painting analysis

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec signs with At the Salon of rue des Moulins one of his most emblematic representations of Parisian nightlife during the Belle Époque. Painted in 1894, this work immerses us in the intimacy of a brothel in the 9th arrondissement of Paris, a place the artist frequented regularly and where he found his most authentic models. Far from any voyeurism or moral judgment, Toulouse-Lautrec depicts these women in a moment of rest, waiting for clients in the establishment's grand salon. The scene captures a raw reality yet imbued with humanity: idle prostitutes, seated on sumptuous red sofas, frozen in silent anticipation that contrasts with the luxurious décor surrounding them.

The composition is organized around these purple divans that structure the space and create remarkable depth. The dominant hues – deep red, powder pink, sea green – give the whole an intimate and melancholic atmosphere. Diffuse light bathes the scene in an almost unreal softness, accentuating the impression of suspended time. In the foreground, a woman in white with green stockings immediately catches the eye, while other feminine silhouettes recede toward the background, near columns and mirrors that testify to the deceptive splendor of the place.

Toulouse-Lautrec's technique, heir to post-impressionism, is characterized by swift brushstrokes and bold patches of color. His direct, almost journalistic approach reflects the influence of Degas and the Japanese prints he admired. The artist favored painting with turpentine essence on cardboard, a support he was particularly fond of for its ability to quickly absorb pigment and convey an almost photographic spontaneity.

Housed in the Toulouse-Lautrec Museum in Albi, this canvas remains an exceptional sociological testimony to the condition of women and the margins of late-19th-century Parisian society. It embodies the modernity of an artistic vision that refuses idealization to reveal dignity in marginality.
