About this artwork - painting analysis
Created in 1883, this preparatory study by Georges Seurat for his masterpiece "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte" already reveals the full modernity of the painter's perspective on Parisian leisure. The Fishermen captures a moment of relaxation on the banks of the Seine, where dark silhouettes stand out against shimmering water. Two men wearing hats are seated in the foreground, absorbed in their contemplative activity, while a boat occupies the background. The balanced composition favours horizontals that structure the space between riverbank, river and horizon, creating an atmosphere of calm and stability characteristic of riverside scenes of the period.
The chromatic palette testifies to already advanced research into contrasts and luminous vibration. Seurat employs warm tones – oranges, ochres and reds – to treat the riverside vegetation and reflections on the water, while the deep violets of the figures create a striking contrast with the luminous background. This approach anticipates the painter's scientific concerns regarding complementary colour theory, although he has not yet adopted the systematic pointillism that would make him famous. The brushstroke remains relatively broad and gestural, close to impressionism from which he is precisely seeking to distance himself through a more rational method.
Held at the Museum of Modern Art in Troyes, this study is part of a series of sketches made on the island of La Grande Jatte, a privileged laboratory where Seurat carefully observes the new leisure practices of the Parisian bourgeoisie. At twenty-four years old, the artist combines naturalistic observation with rigorous construction, laying the foundations of neo-impressionism. This canvas not only prefigures the monumental Grande Jatte completed in 1886, but also an entire pictorial revolution based on the scientific harmony of tones and the geometrization of space, which would have a lasting influence on twentieth-century modern art.
