Pierre-Auguste Renoir creates with Bather a luminous celebration of femininity and sensuality, embodied by this red-haired young woman, half-undressed and caught in a moment of natural intimacy. The central figure, turned three-quarters toward the viewer, lets a white drape slip over her shoulders while she delicately raises a hand to her forehead, in a gesture filled with spontaneous grace. Her auburn hair, shot through with copper and golden highlights, cascades over her bare shoulder, creating a striking contrast with the pearly luminosity of her skin. The background evokes a maritime landscape in blue and yellow tones, treated with that characteristic dissolution of forms that immerses the setting in a vaporous and dreamlike atmosphere.

Renoir's Impressionist technique reaches remarkable maturity here, marked by this period known as "Ingresque" or "harsh" in the 1880s, when the artist reconnects with a more defined rendering of volumes following his journey to Italy.
