About this artwork - painting analysis
Raphael's ultimate masterpiece, The Transfiguration was completed in 1520, merely days before the artist's untimely death at the age of thirty-seven. This engraving faithfully reproduces the original monumental composition preserved in the Vatican Pinacoteca, bearing witness to the lasting influence of this major work of Italian Renaissance. The painting illustrates the evangelical episode in which Christ appears transfigured on Mount Tabor, surrounded by Moses and Elijah, while below the apostles vainly attempt to heal a possessed child.
The composition divides masterfully into two distinct registers. In the upper section, bathed in brilliant celestial light, Christ rises in luminous glory, his arms open, flanked by the two Old Testament prophets. The three apostles present – Peter, James and John – are dazzled by this divine vision, represented in expressive poses that convey their astonishment. The contrast is striking with the lower earthly scene, plunged in a darker and more turbulent atmosphere, where the crowd presses around the tormented child. This duality between divine serenity and human chaos structures the whole with exceptional dramatic power.
Raphael deploys in this work all the technical mastery that characterizes the High Renaissance. The pyramidal composition, the balance of masses, the subtle treatment of drapery and the expressiveness of faces reveal the culmination of his art. Commissioned by Cardinal Giulio de' Medici for Narbonne Cathedral, the work never left Rome, displayed above Raphael's coffin during his funeral. The complexity of its construction, blending anatomical realism with transcendent spirituality, made it an indispensable reference immediately.
The Transfiguration remains considered Raphael's artistic testament, a masterful synthesis of his aesthetic research. Its influence crossed the centuries, inspiring countless artists and symbolizing the apex of Renaissance religious painting, where humanism and Christian faith merge in incomparable visual harmony.
