About this artwork - painting analysis
Commissioned by Sigismondo de' Conti, secretary to Pope Julius II, the Madonna of Foligno bears witness to Raphael's genius at the height of his Roman period. This monumental religious painting illustrates a celestial vision in which the Virgin and Child appear within a luminous mandorla, surrounded by angels and dominating an earthly scene populated by intercessory saints. The patron himself is depicted kneeling, presented by Saint Jerome, while Saint John the Baptist – recognizable by his camel-hair garment – points prophetically toward the Virgin. Saint Francis of Assisi completes this sacred assembly, accompanied by an angel holding a tablet intended to receive a dedicatory inscription.
The composition is structured according to a bold vertical articulation that unites the divine and earthly realms. Raphael deploys a brilliant chromatic palette dominated by the deep blues of the Virgin's mantle, the crimson reds of the drapery, and the golden tonalities radiating from the celestial apparition. The background reveals a meticulously detailed urban landscape, probably inspired by Foligno, with its Renaissance architectures bathed in remarkable atmospheric light. A fragmented rainbow spans the sky, creating a subtle transition between the celestial and earthly spheres. Raphael's technique reaches exceptional maturity here, combining the softness of Leonardesque sfumato with Michelangelesque monumentality, distinctive hallmarks of Roman High Renaissance.
Originally intended for the church of Santa Maria in Aracoeli in Rome, this work was transferred to Foligno before being confiscated by Napoleonic troops in 1797. Returned to the Papal States in 1815, it now enriches the collections of the Vatican Pinacotheca. The Madonna of Foligno remains an essential milestone in the evolution of Renaissance altarpiece painting, exerting lasting influence on generations of Baroque artists through its perfect balance between contemplative mysticism and humanistic naturalism.
