About this artwork - painting analysis
Nicolas Poussin signed in 1623 one of his earliest ambitious historical compositions with The Victory of Joshua over the Amalekites, a monumental canvas that testifies to his precocious mastery of history painting. Inspired by the Old Testament, this painting illustrates the biblical episode in which Joshua, successor to Moses, leads the Hebrews into battle against the Amalekite people in the desert. The scene depicts the crucial moment of confrontation, when divine victory manifests itself through the intervention of Moses, who, raising his arms atop a hill, ensures the superiority of the Israelites as long as his hands remain raised.
The composition unfolds in a chaos masterfully orchestrated by Poussin. In the foreground, the muscular bodies of combatants intertwine in furious melee where archers, cavalry and foot soldiers clash with a violence contained by classical rigor. The draperies in crimson red, golden ochre and olive green tones punctuate the scene while gleaming armor captures the natural light that bathes the whole. In the background, on a prominence, Moses appears surrounded by Aaron and Hur who support his weary arms – an essential narrative detail that Poussin subtly integrates into the overall composition.
Executed during his first Roman sojourn, this work reveals the decisive influence of Raphael and Renaissance masters on the young French artist. Poussinian classicism already asserts itself in this quest for balance between Baroque dynamism and rational clarity, between dramatic emotion and intellectual construction. The oil on canvas technique demonstrates careful execution where every gesture, every anatomical detail bears witness to a thorough study of antiquity and academic drawing.
Housed in the prestigious Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, The Victory of Joshua over the Amalekites constitutes a fundamental milestone in the evolution of French classicism and prefigures the great historical compositions that would definitively establish Poussin's reputation as the painter-philosopher of his century.
