About this artwork - painting analysis

Completed in 1658, Nicolas Poussin's The Flight into Egypt illustrates the biblical episode in which the Holy Family escapes the Massacre of the Innocents ordered by Herod. The French master of classicism deploys a scene imbued with divine serenity despite the gravity of the context. At the center of the composition, the Virgin Mary, draped in white and blue, carries the Christ Child in her arms while a majestic angel with outstretched wings guides her with a protective gesture. Saint Joseph, dressed in an ochre and red mantle, follows the sacred group, pilgrim's staff in hand. At their side, a bedridden figure in the foreground possibly evokes the fatigue of the journey or an allegorical figure, while ancient ruins and a column topped with a gilded urn anchor the scene in an idealized landscape that blends references to ancient Rome and lush nature.

The chromatic palette reveals all of Poussin's mastery in the harmony of tones: the luminous whites of the Virgin's veil contrast with the warm ochres, deep blues and soothing greens of the landscape. The light, soft and diffuse, bathes the composition in a contemplative atmosphere characteristic of French classicism. The artist organizes space according to a rigorous geometry where each element finds its place in a skillful balance between architecture, nature and human figures. This pursuit of clarity and order bears witness to the influence of Raphael and Roman Antiquity, constant sources of inspiration for Poussin during his long stay in Italy.

Painted during the last decade of his life, this work reflects the spiritual and artistic maturity of Nicolas Poussin, tutelary figure of the Grand Siècle. Housed in the Louvre Museum, The Flight into Egypt embodies the ideal of classicism where reason and faith meet in a refined representation of the sacred, establishing an aesthetic model that would durably influence French painting through to neoclassicism.
