Painted in 1873, The Banks of the Oise near Pontoise bears witness to Camille Pissarro's deep attachment to this region of the French Vexin where he settled in 1866. This canvas captures a moment of rural tranquility along the river: an earthen path winds through the foreground, bordered by verdant grasses, while to the right the Oise stretches peacefully, reflecting a sky laden with clouds. Anonymous figures of strollers discreetly animate the scene – two figures make their way along the road while another stands out near the water, close to a moored sailboat. In the background, red-roofed houses punctuate the rural landscape, framed by the lush vegetation of trees and copses.
Pissarro's palette favors here soft and natural tones: the greyish blues of the turbulent sky dialogue harmoniously with the tender greens of the meadows and the luminous beige of the path.
