About this artwork - painting analysis
Painted in 1918, only a few months before Amedeo Modigliani's death, this portrait of Alice bears witness to the full stylistic maturity of the Italian artist settled in Paris. The young girl with an enigmatic gaze stands out against a background with characteristic grey-blue tones, dressed in a blue dress adorned with a white ruffled collar and a small crucifix hanging from her neck. Her long black hair, braided and tied with a white ribbon, frames a face with simplified yet profoundly expressive features. The inscription "ALICE" written in the upper left corner confirms the identity of the model, in keeping with Modigliani's usual practice of frequently naming his subjects directly on the canvas.
The pictorial technique reveals all the characteristics of the unmistakable style of the School of Paris: an elongated oval face, an elegant neck, almond-shaped eyes with asymmetrical pupils, and that expression both melancholic and mysterious. The contours are outlined with dark lines that recall the influence of Italian primitives and African sculpture, which Modigliani deeply admired. The restricted color palette—dominated by blues, ochres, and greys—creates an atmosphere of intimate, almost solemn introspection despite the youth of the model. The thick texture of oil paint, visible in the impasto of the face and dress, confers a tactile presence upon this apparently fragile figure.
Created during that terrible year of the Spanish flu that ravaged Europe, this portrait belongs to the most prolific but also the darkest period of Modigliani's career. The artist, weakened by tuberculosis and poverty, nonetheless continued to produce works of remarkable psychological intensity. Now housed at the Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen, Alice embodies that unique capacity Modigliani possessed to capture the essence of his models while imposing his singular plastic universe, leaving a lasting mark on the history of modern portraiture.
