Bathed in an enveloping and almost hypnotic brick-red tonality, Henri Matisse's Red Studio disrupted the conventions of spatial representation in 1911. This radical chromatic immersion allows only the outlines of objects, furniture, and artworks—paintings, sculptures, ceramics—to emerge, floating like ghostly presences upon this scarlet sea. Matisse deliberately erases traditional depth in favor of a flat, decorative surface, where each element dialogues with the background in orchestrated harmony.
