About this artwork - painting analysis
Painted in 1939, Simple Complexity bears witness to the culmination of Vassily Kandinsky's pictorial language, a guiding figure of abstraction and pioneer of modern art. Created during the final years of his life spent in France, this composition illustrates the masterful synthesis between formal rigor and organic fantasy that characterizes his Parisian period. The title itself reveals this fertile paradox: an apparent simplicity that conceals a construction of great intellectual and visual complexity.
The work unfolds a teeming universe of geometric and biomorphic forms that intertwine in dynamic equilibrium. A large green silhouette adorned with orange motifs dominates the upper right register, evoking simultaneously a plant organism and a totemic figure. On the left, a blue frame contains an architectural composition in yellow and pink tones, creating a picture within the picture. The rest of the surface is populated with tubular figures, circles, curved lines and decorative elements – stylized flowers, U-shaped forms, colored segments – that create a sustained visual rhythm. The luminous palette blends delicate pastels and bold colors: tart greens, intense reds, lavender blues, solar yellows, all outlined in black to reinforce their presence.
This period of the Russian artist, settled in Neuilly-sur-Seine since 1933 after the closure of the Bauhaus, reveals a notable evolution towards freer and more organic forms, influenced by the surrounding surrealism and pre-Columbian art. Kandinsky then develops a personal visual vocabulary where apparent spontaneity masks rigorous construction, inherited from his theoretical research on spirituality in art and correspondences between form, color and sound.
Held at the National Museum of Modern Art, this late work embodies the creative maturity of a master who never ceased to reinvent his plastic language until his death in 1944, bequeathing to contemporary art an invaluable legacy on the expressive possibilities of pure abstraction.
