About this artwork - painting analysis

A late masterpiece by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, The Princess de Broglie immortalizes in 1853 the aristocrat Pauline de Broglie, born de Galard de Brassac de Béarn, in all the splendor of her youth and social rank. The wife of diplomat Albert de Broglie, the princess poses here at twenty-eight years old, mere years before her untimely death in 1860. The painter, then seventy-three years old, deploys all his talent to capture not only the physical beauty of his model, but also a certain melancholy perceptible in her thoughtful and slightly distant gaze.

The composition testifies to Ingres' genius for marrying classical rigor with the sensuality of textures. The princess sits majestically in her luminous blue satin dress, whose folds capture light with stunning virtuosity. Transparent lace sleeves reveal the delicate complexion of her arms adorned with gold bracelets, while a golden medallion ornaments her graceful neck. The contrast between the brilliant blue of the dress and the sumptuous yellow of the armchair creates a chromatic harmony of rare sophistication. The neutral background, typical of neoclassical style, concentrates attention on the central figure and accentuates the monumental presence of the model.

A major representative of French neoclassicism, Ingres privileges here the pure line and impeccable modeling that characterize his pictorial approach. His meticulous, almost enameled technique, confers upon the fabrics a striking materiality while subtly idealizing the features of the face. This work inscribes itself within the long tradition of aristocratic portraiture while announcing photography through its precise realism.

Housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, this portrait counts among Ingres' last great achievements and perfectly illustrates his ability to elevate his models without dehumanizing them. The work remains an exceptional testimony to Parisian elegance of the Second Empire and to the refinement of an aristocratic society at its height.
