About this artwork - painting analysis

A true manifesto of the ambitions of a young Aragonese painter, Francisco Goya's Count of Floridablanca represents far more than a simple official portrait. Created in 1783, this large-scale painting – 262 x 166 cm – immortalizes José Moñino y Redondo, the enlightened minister of Charles III and a central figure in Spanish politics. The work bears witness to a decisive moment in Goya's career, when he was seeking to establish himself at the Madrid court. In a solemn theatrical staging, the count appears at the center of the composition, dressed in a sumptuous red coat embroidered with gold and adorned with the blue ribbon of the Order of Charles III. The minister extends his hand toward Goya himself, represented on the left in black attire, presenting him with a painting – probably a sketch intended for the king. This bold inclusion of the artist in the official portrait reveals his desire for social and artistic recognition.

The composition is structured around baroque theatricality, accentuated by the green drapery unfurled in the background and the presence of symbolic accessories scattered on the ground: architectural plans, books and documents evoking the reforms undertaken by the minister. On the right, a gilded clock and a bust recall the temporal and commemorative dimension of the work. The chromatic palette favors contrasts between the brilliant red of the costume, the shimmering golds of the embroidery and the dark tones of the background, creating a dramatic depth characteristic of late rococo style. The light, skillfully orchestrated, sculpts the faces and makes the precious materials vibrate.

This canvas marks a crucial turning point in Goya's stylistic evolution, between the tradition of formal portraiture and an emerging modernity perceptible in the psychological rendering of physiognomies. Housed today in the collection of the Bank of Spain in Madrid, it remains a fascinating testament to the ambitions of an artist destined to revolutionize Spanish and European painting.
