About this artwork - painting analysis
Inspired by a tumultuous episode from Walter Scott's medieval novel Ivanhoe, Eugène Delacroix signs with The Abduction of Rebecca one of his most dramatic and passionate compositions. Painted in 1858, five years before the death of the Romantic master, this canvas conveys with fervor the moment when young Rebecca, captive in a besieged castle, is snatched from the flames by a Saracen knight mounted on an impetuous destrier. The action unfolds before a medieval fortress surrounded by fire and battle, whose crenellated walls powerfully structure the background. In the foreground, armored warriors and rearing horses create a whirlwind of movement where violence and bravery mingle.
Delacroix's palette displays here all his mastery of chromatic contrasts: the golden ochres of the citadel blaze beneath the bluish light of the stormy sky, while the brilliant reds of Oriental costumes rival the luminous white of the mounts. This colorful polyphony, applied through vibrant and nervous brushstrokes, infuses the scene with feverish energy. The spiral composition draws the viewer's gaze into a visual crescendo, from the debris of war at the bottom of the canvas to the smoking towers that soar toward the clouds. This upward dynamism and the expressiveness of the bodies reveal the heritage of Rubens, whom Delacroix deeply admired, while asserting the singularity of his own Romantic vision.
Housed in the Louvre Museum, this late work testifies to the painter's persistent fascination with the Orient, a theme he never ceased to explore since his journey to Morocco in 1832. Far from becoming more restrained with age, Delacroix maintains intact his taste for epic and exotic subjects, refusing academic conventions until his final paintings. The Abduction of Rebecca thus remains a resplendent manifesto of French Romanticism, celebrating pictorial freedom and the passionate intensity that durably transformed the history of modern art.
