Imbued with the vibrant exoticism of the Maghreb, this canvas by Eugène Delacroix entitled Fanatics of Tangier plunges the viewer into the heart of a scene of religious trance observed during the painter's Moroccan journey in 1832. Six years after this formative experience, Delacroix restores with dramatic power the effervescence of a Sufi brotherhood in the throes of mystical ecstasy.
