About this artwork - painting analysis
Painted in 1774, Erasistratus Discovering the Cause of Antiochus's Illness marks a turning point in the career of young Jacques-Louis David, then a resident at the Royal Academy. This canvas illustrates a famous episode from Antiquity in which the Greek physician Erasistratus diagnoses that the son of King Seleucus, Antiochus, is wasting away from love for his stepmother Stratonice. The painter chooses the moment of revelation when the physician observes the prince's physical symptoms – accelerated pulse, blushing – in the presence of the young woman, thus confirming his intuition. David organizes his composition according to rigorous symmetry, placing the patient's bed at the center around which the protagonists gravitate, while the monumental architecture in the background reinforces the solemnity of the scene.
The color palette is built around powerful contrasts between the deep reds of the draperies, the luminous whites of the tunics, and the dark tones that envelop the space. The light, skillfully directed, sculpts the bodies and faces, creating a theatrical atmosphere befitting grand historical compositions. The fluted columns and architectural ornaments bear witness to David's fascination with Antiquity, enriched by his Roman sojourn that would follow this work. The precision of the drawing, the nobility of the poses, and the intensity of the expressions already reveal the characteristics of Neoclassicism, of which the painter would become the undisputed master.
Held at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, this youthful work was presented as his reception piece for the Prix de Rome, which David obtained on his fourth attempt. While certain details still betray the influence of late Rococo, the composition announces the moral and formal rigor that would characterize his later masterpieces such as The Oath of the Horatii. This canvas remains an essential testimony to the academic training of the French master and foreshadows the aesthetic revolution he would impose on history painting, placing ancient virtue and narrative clarity at the heart of his art.
