About this artwork - painting analysis
Created in 1467, Sandro Botticelli's Virgin and Child with an Angel gracefully illustrates the early years of the Florentine master's career, when he was barely twenty-two years old. This work of private devotion, with its intimate dimensions of 87 x 60 centimetres, already bears witness to remarkable technical mastery for so young an artist. The triangular composition, centred on the figure of Mary dressed in an intense blue mantle enhanced with coral red, establishes a soothing visual harmony. The Christ Child, comfortably seated on his mother's lap, makes a tender gesture towards the angel who presents him with a basket filled with fruits and ears of wheat – Eucharistic symbols recalling the sacrifice to come.
The architecture in the background, typical of the Florentine Renaissance, frames the sacred figures within an earthly setting marked by rational perspective. The Tuscan landscape stretching into the distance, bathed in golden light, creates a subtle atmospheric depth. Botticelli demonstrates here the lessons learned from Fra Filippo Lippi, whose soft facial features and elegant drapery with carefully orchestrated folds he adopts. The linear refinement that will characterize his later masterpieces is already apparent in the delicate treatment of the hair and the anatomical precision of the figures.
This tempera on panel is fully part of the artistic renewal of the Florentine Quattrocento, a period when patrons – often drawn from wealthy merchant families – commissioned Marian representations intended to adorn their homes. The chromatic palette favors precious pigments, notably genuine ultramarine for the Virgin's mantle, testifying to the elevated status of the patron. Preserved in the Galleria dello Spedale degli Innocenti, this youthful work reveals the stylistic foundations upon which Botticelli would build his international reputation, already anticipating the timeless grace that would immortalize his name in the history of Western art.
