Painted in 1834 following his journey to North Africa, Eugène Delacroix signed with his Women of Algiers in Their Apartments one of the masterpieces of orientalist romanticism. This monumental canvas of 180 x 229 cm, housed in the Louvre Museum, immortalizes a rare and privileged moment: the interior of an Algerian harem, a world usually forbidden to Western eyes. Three women move about in an atmosphere of refined languor, surrounded by precious fabrics, ceramics and architectural motifs typical of the Maghreb. A Black servant stands in the background, while the odalisques, dressed in richly decorated costumes with silky reflections, seem abandoned to a timeless reverie. The hookah, the babouches and the embroidered cushions compose a luxurious setting that fascinated the European imagination of the era.
The chromatic palette unfolds in sumptuous harmony where golden ochres, deep greens and mother-of-pearl whites dominate, traversed by a filtered light that caresses the flesh and makes the fabrics shimmer. Delacroix masterfully commands the interplay of shadows and color contrasts, a technique he theorizes in his writings and which would durably influence the Impressionists. His vibrant brushwork and freedom of execution break with neoclassical academicism, establishing a more sensual and emotional vision of painting.
This work stems from the painter's direct experience during his stay in Morocco and Algeria in 1832, following a French diplomatic mission. Delacroix apparently had the exceptional opportunity to enter a female interior, an extremely rare privilege from which he preserved precious sketches. The painting aroused Baudelaire's admiration and notably inspired Renoir and Picasso, the latter creating fifteen variations based on this composition in 1954-1955. Through its vision at once documentary and fantasized of the Orient, this canvas remains an ambiguous yet fascinating testimony to the Western gaze upon Mediterranean otherness in the nineteenth century.
