About this artwork - painting analysis
Painted in 1894, this Still Life by Paul Cézanne displays one of the most characteristic arrangements of the master of Aix-en-Provence on a table. A white tablecloth with sculpted folds sits alongside a blue-green drape with ornamental motifs, creating a theatrical base for a carefully orchestrated composition. On this domestic scene stand two wine bottles – one vertical and slender, the other squat with its long neck – a transparent glass that captures the light, and a selection of fruits in warm tones: apples and oranges whose yellows and reds vibrate against the cool tones of the surroundings. The background breaks down into broad blue-green and grey planes, punctuated by a dark vertical band that structures the space with bold geometry.
Cézanne's technique asserts itself here in all its modernity: multiple perspectives overlap, the table seems to tilt toward the viewer, objects are observed from different angles simultaneously. This spatial fragmentation, typical of his post-impressionist approach, already announces the cubist revolutions of the early twentieth century. The brushstrokes, applied in small juxtaposed areas of colour, construct volume without resorting to traditional academic modeling. The contours are never sharp but suggested by subtle chromatic transitions, giving the objects a vibrant and tangible presence.
This period of the 1890s represents the apex of Cézanne's reflection on still life, a genre he elevates to the rank of pictorial manifesto. Far from the decorative compositions of his predecessors, he transforms these arrangements of everyday objects into experimental laboratories where pictorial language is reinvented. The drapes with their ample curves dialogue with the roundness of the fruits, while the verticals of the bottles create a dynamic tension.
Held at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, this canvas testifies to the considerable influence Cézanne would exert on succeeding generations, from Picasso to Matisse, who would recognize in him the father of modern art.
