Painted in 1889 by Paul Cézanne, Boy in a Red Waistcoat testifies to the master of Aix-en-Provence's profound interest in the human figure at a pivotal moment in his career. The young model, whose identity remains uncertain – probably an Italian boy encountered during a Parisian stay – adopts a nonchalant pose, leaning on an indeterminate surface, his gaze lost in silent reverie. His right arm rests on a sculptural white drapery, while his left hand surrenders to a gesture of contemplative weariness.

The chromatic palette reveals all of Cézanne's sophistication in treating volumes and planes.
